Honouring Indigenous Leadership—International Women’s Day 2026

Hope Vale Foundation proudly acknowledges the leadership and achievements of Indigenous women in agriculture and aquaculture — sectors traditionally dominated by men. This International Women’s Day, we highlight the vital contributions of our Board members, Mrs Cheryl Cannon and Mrs Kaylene Bowen, whose leadership reflects resilience, integrity and a deep commitment to community.

Cheryl and Kaylene represent two distinct yet equally valuable leadership styles. One leads with confident decisiveness, the other with quiet observation and thoughtful insight. Together, they bring balance, cultural knowledge and strategic strength to an industry that is undergoing transformation in our region.

Historically, Indigenous women in Hope Vale—as in many communities—have not always been recognised as knowledge holders or innovators. Their roles, though central to family and community life, were rarely acknowledged as pathways to leadership. Cheryl and Kaylene’s presence at the decisionmaking table marks a significant shift: Indigenous women stepping into advanced leadership positions in agriculture and aquaculture, shaping the future of these industries with cultural authority and vision.

The Foundation set a clear and ambitious goal: to rebuild agriculture and aquaculture in Hope Vale. While we did not begin with all the answers, we aligned with partners who listened, understood our aspirations, and shared our vision for the future. Through challenges and uncertainty, our women leaders remained steadfast, ensuring that opportunities for economic development, cultural strengthening, and community empowerment stayed at the forefront.

Leadership requires resilience, strategic thinking and the ability to remain composed under pressure. For Indigenous women, this also includes navigating complex community dynamics with professionalism and empathy. Cheryl and Kaylene embody these qualities. Their leadership is grounded in purpose—not recognition—and driven by a desire to create meaningful opportunities for the next generation.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we honour the women whose strength, courage and dedication continue to uplift Hope Vale. We acknowledge the essential role Indigenous women play in shaping industries, supporting emerging leaders, and fostering a community grounded in respect and collective progress.

At Hope Vale Foundation, we believe that true leadership is shown not in individual accolades but in the ability to uplift others. Together, we continue to build a future where Indigenous women’s achievements are recognised, celebrated and carried forward with pride.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we walk. We pay our respects to Elders past and present as we walk this journey of healing together.
