Sustainable Economic Growth in Regional Australia (SEGRA) 2026
Hope Vale Foundation is progressing a long-term vision for sustainable economic growth in regional Australia through the development of an Indigenous-led aquaculture industry.
At the centre of this work is the commercialisation of Australia’s native giant freshwater prawn—an opportunity that brings together cultural knowledge, innovation, and practical economic development on Country.
The need for solutions is clear. Cape York communities experience significantly higher rates of food insecurity, driven in part by limited local economic opportunities. At the same time, global demand for sustainable protein continues to grow, with the world expected to require 70% more food by 2050.
In response, Hope Vale Foundation is developing a scalable aquaculture system, spanning breeding, hatchery, nursery and production, through to market-ready product. This work aligns with a global market valued at approximately USD $5 billion for giant freshwater prawns.
The initiative goes beyond production. It supports sustainable Indigenous agriculture through land stewardship, cultural preservation, and the use of native species, while creating training and employment pathways for community members.
Hope Vale Foundation continues to build momentum through key milestones, including securing pond leases, progressing development approvals, and co-designing a Certificate II in Aquaculture for remote delivery. Strong partnerships with organisations such as CSIRO, the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, and the National Indigenous Australians Agency are supporting this progress.
Looking ahead, the project is positioned for growth, with increasing production capacity and opportunities for broader market exposure. The focus remains on delivering long-term outcomes—economic participation, local skills development, and sustainable food systems—while ensuring benefits are shared across the community.
This work reflects a broader approach to economic development, where collaboration, infrastructure, policy support, and investment come together to enable lasting change on Country.
