KATHERINE STEFFENSEN_DIRECTOR and CHAIR

In Memory of Katherine Gibson-Steffensen: A Legacy of Community, Culture, and Love

The Hope Vale Foundation extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Hope Vale Foundation’s Chairperson, Katherine Gibson-Steffensen, who passed away unexpectedly on Sunday 8 December 2024.

Christine Gibson, Katherine’s sister, sadly passed away in the same tragic incident. Christine was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.

Katherine was a proud Dhubbi Warra, Darpa, Birri Gubba, Bugun, and Angkamuthi woman who was recently re-elected as Chairperson of the Hope Vale Foundation. Her unwavering dedication to her community will be greatly missed.

In her role as an Engagement Officer at the My Pathway Office in Hope Vale, Katherine worked hard to create opportunities for the community. Her extensive experience in the Community Development Programme complemented her passion for helping participants upskill and enhance their employment prospects.

A devoted mother and grandmother, Katherine cherished her time with her grandchildren, capturing precious memories through her camera lens.

Her talent and love for photography earned her international recognition. Katherine was selected, alongside other Indigenous photographers worldwide, to showcase her ‘Right to Water’ piece at the World Indigenous Forum in New York. She also published a children’s book in 2009, further sharing her creativity and culture.

Some of her most treasured moments were spent at her beloved beach house at Munbah, surrounded by family.

Katherine’s legacy of community service, creativity, and love for family will remain an enduring inspiration.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we walk. We pay our respects to Elders past and present as we walk this journey of healing together.
