Hope Vale Foundation is proud to play a role in the development of First Nations Aquaculture in Australia’s Tropical Zone. Aquaculture is the farming of animals and/or plants in a controlled water environment, rather than wild caught or harvested.

Mariculture is one of the many ways aquaculture can be used, it’s a farming technique growing marine organisms in their natural environment.

The Blacklip Tropical Rock Oyster is a First Nations food gathered and eaten for thousands of years along Australia’s tropical coast, from Canaveron in Western Australia to Gladstone here in Queensland. With the support of the Federal and Queensland Governments, Blacklip spat (babies) can now be produced in commercial quantities, giving communities with access to suitable water conditions an opportunity to establish oyster farms as a source of fresh food, employment and economic development.

Hope Vale Foundation is proud to support this emerging industry and hopes that the Blacklip will feature on menus across the country in the not so distant future.
