Hope Vale Traditional Owners learning fire management skills hands on.

Traditional Owners lead the way in fire management

The Foundation Farm recently became a hub of learning and empowerment, hosting a nationally accredited fire management course that has made a lasting impact on the Hope Vale community. Over four days of intensive training, seven Hope Vale Traditional Owners achieved national certification, equipping them with essential skills to protect and manage their land.

Among the newly qualified is Kiethen Bowen, who has taken on the important role of Hope Vale’s Fire Warden. His leadership will be instrumental in safeguarding the community and its environment, ensuring that traditional knowledge and modern practices are seamlessly integrated in fire management.

The training was expertly facilitated by Deni Kelly, Project Officer at South Cape York Catchments, who not only shared his extensive expertise but also committed to ongoing support for the Foundation’s future planned burns. His guidance has also extended to innovative fire control methods, particularly in tackling the weed infestation in the eastern paddock.

This initiative underscores the Foundation’s dedication to empowering Traditional Owners with the tools and knowledge to steward their land sustainably, ensuring that Hope Vale continues to thrive for generations to come.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we walk. We pay our respects to Elders past and present as we walk this journey of healing together.
